Erasing Heart Scribbles

We have been learning to forgive in our small group study that a wonderful Christian women and I have been leading and the other day as I read through our study on Unforgiveness I remembered this post I wrote more than two years ago on Heart Writing and in it I mentioned God erasing the scribbles on our hearts placed there by the hurts of others. As we walk this journey with Him we grow as we go and so I have updated what He continues to teach me. Please read through it and find at the end just how our loving Father erases those scribbles for us and brings us through to the other side because He is faithful.

I just have to say that we had another wonderful Women’s Faith Lift event yesterday. We all had such a wonderful time talking, sharing and being built up by God but when I left there I wondered why don’t I let people into my life? Our pastor always talks about doing authentic community together and connecting with others and I wondered why I can’t seem to do that. There are very few people I ever let get close to me and I asked God “Why?”

Have you ever been hurt in life by people or relationships? What a no brainer question that is. Of course you have. We all have but sometimes we can be hurt so deeply by a friend we trust and sometimes more than once by that same person. Sometimes the cut can be so deep that it changes who we are and how we interact with others. Sometimes we come up with a plan of protection. I know what I will do. I will build walls to protect my heart from that kind of hurt. Have you ever done that? That’s what I did. God answered my question “Why?” this morning on our drive to church when I realized that what that friendship taught me was that I would rather be safe than to risk being hurt like that again. I didn’t know that about myself. Have you ever thought that? This one realization has brought such healing to my heart already and it’s only 2 in the afternoon. lol

I am sure that that is not how God wants us to live. We can dwell on that one negative or we can chose to develop authentic Christian friendships.

We all have people in our lives who write on our hearts. Just because someone scribbles on our heart doesn’t mean we should stop allowing others to write on it. As I thought about it God showed me all the wonderful women friends over the years who have written beautiful things on my heart.

I know I’ve mentioned before that I asked God to teach me to love like He loves and He told me it would cost me everything and that scared me but I don’t believe I have a choice if I am going to grow in the character or Christ. So on this journey of learning to love like Christ loves this morning as I spent time with God I realized that I was confusing trust with love. Jesus himself did not trust man because He knew what was in their heart it says in John 2:24 yet He loved them. We cannot protect our hearts from hurt but we can trust God that He will help us deal with that. In my conversation with Him this morning He asked me “Do you love your children?” “Yes I do.” “Do you trust them not to hurt you?” “No, I don’t.” They have hurt me in the past and I know that at some point they probably will hurt me in the future but I love them anyway. Just know that going in, that people probably will hurt you but love them anyway and trust the love of God to overcome that.

Here is my learning update.

This morning as I said to God “But I don’t want to be hurt like that again God.” He said “Don’t give your heart away like that.” “How do I love if I don’t give my heart away?” His response overwhelmed me. “It is not your heart you are giving away. It is Mine.” Wow. Know that the heart you are giving away is not yours but His. Trust God to erase the scribbles on your heart through forgiveness. When we forgive through the power of the Holy Spirit God literally erases those scribbles on our hearts and then He gives us the ability to allow others to write beauty on our hearts instead of hurts. If per chance someones scribbles make their way to your heart again just keep the eraser handy. I’ll admit that sometimes I need an industrial strength eraser like Mr Clean. ;) That’s when I pull out the word of God. He helps me apply my industrial strength eraser until the scribbles are all erased for He tells me

Matt 6:15 For if you forgive others for their transgressions, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. ”But if you do not forgive others, then your Father will not forgive your transgressions.

Matt 5:7 Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.

Luke 7:47 “For this reason I say to you, her sins, which are many, have been forgiven, for she loved much; but he who is forgiven little, loves little.” “Love much Beth.”

Eph 4:32 Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

He used many others over the years but you get the idea. Forgiveness is a tool God uses to keep our hearts free of scribbles. lol Remember God knew what was in the heart of man and loved them anyway. That is agape love. Father, I pray you will teach us to love like that.

I would like to say it was quick and easy but alas it is a process. Somedays I would wonder if I would ever make it through to the other side but with God’s help I did. After a a couple years of using the industrial strength eraser I can truly say the scribbles on my heart are gone and it is now being filled with the beautiful heart writings of God and other wonderful godly friends and family so don’t give up with God’s help your scribbles will be erased as well. ;)

What are you writing on the hearts of others? As women let’s be careful not to scribble on others hearts but let’s be the ones that write beautiful things on them.

Thank you Father for continuing to teach and grow us. We so need it every single day. ;)

I have been sick for whole week, this is my first time reading actually. After a week’s sleeping, confusing and suffering of headache and muscle pain! This article makes my mind clear and brings me back to the real world.

We can do anything with the help from God who gives us strength. Actually, forgive others is to forgive ourselves as if we do not forgive we hold hatred, bitterness, resentment and anger which do us more harm than good.
Let us use God’s strong eraser to erase the deepest hurt in our heart.

Thank you very much for sharing with us Beth

Thank you Marilyn. I like the way God uses such ordinary things to teach us. Who knew that an everyday thing as a Mister Clean eraser could have such a spiritual implication. lol Only God. ;) So glad He has a sense of humor and helps me see it His way.
