Butterflies or Deer

Have you ever lost your focus? I learned this morning that it happens to me way more than I realized. My husband has a funny way of bringing me back around when I lose mine. He just says to me “Butterflies.” I laugh and immediately picture the little boys in the outfield. They are supposed to be watching for and concentrating on the ball but a pretty butterfly floats by and they lose focus and miss the ball flying by. Well I had a butterfly moment today with God. I’m so glad God has a sense of humor. This morning as I was spending time with Him, I was reading in Ephesians and wondering why I can’t get victory in some areas of my life. As I was asking God that exact question I looked up and saw six white tail deer running across my neighbor’s yard so of course I got up and ran to the window to watch them cross her backyard and head into the woods where they belong. As I was returning to my sofa to continue my talk with God I heard Him speak so clearly to my spirit the answer to my question “Because you don’t stay focused.” Ouch! The deer were my butterflies. He just gave me a perfect object lesson and I have to admit that is true. I do lose my focus. I wonder if it might be true for others as well. The enemy is so good at distracting me from the victory. When you are trying to get victory in an area do you get side tracked and lose focus as well? Do you have butterfly moments? I am thanking God for the object lesson and praying that the next battle I fight I won’t watch butterflies or deer in this case. (lol) I’m praying I will maintain focus and will have victory. I’m going to be practicing putting on the full armor of God. I wonder which piece of armor will help me maintain my focus.

Eph 6:10-19 Finally my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints.

Possibly it is the last verse, praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit. That is the one that will help us maintain our focus. Thank you Lord that you teach me every single day. I so need it.

Hi Beth. I’ve been reading your website for a little over 3 months now. I always look forward to the insights the Lord is teaching you. Thank you for taking the time to share them with us. This passage of Scripture has been extremely helpful to me in dealing with stressful people in my life. I remember that it is not them I’m truly dealing with, but with the enemy of my soul. He wants to discredit my witness. The Full Armor Of God helps me stay focused on the Lord’s mission for my life. God bless you and your family.

Oh yes, there are many distractions for all of us, not just the deer and butterflies. Trying to focus on God when walking is always a challenge because He created so much beauty in this world which becomes my distraction! Love your blog and oh yes, there are many who read it you don’t even know about, but God does. So keep up the great work!

Thanks Alona for the encouragement. It’s nice to know. I guess I just think if I deal with things others do as well and I’m not afraid to be vulnerable and share my struggles. It’s nice to know we are not the only one that deals with them. God is so good to help us through them all when we ask Him for help. ;)

Beth, you are not alone. I think staying focused on God is a life long learning process. The enemy knows that’s a weakness and uses it, but we have a patient and loving Father who is waiting and always there when when we bring our thoughts back to Him..

Thank you for sharing your vulnerabilities and struggles as well as your God given insights and wisdom. They are a comfort.
